DMC-ZS Models - DMC-FH Models - DMC-LX Models - Other DMC Cameras
Panasonic camera's are relatively new to the market, if you compare them to Canon for example. However, for the price and quality, I really recommend the Lumix line from Panasonic. They are great cameras, and there are many different models to choose from so it is easy to find a model that will suit your photography needs and style.
To make it easier to understand, the Lumix camera models are grouped together using a series of letters and numbers which might seem strange at first, but after reading this, you will be able to identify the cameras more easily and narrow down your choices. It is not necessary to understand the designations, but it does make it easier to shop as you will know your product better.
All Panasonic Lumix cameras start with a prefix of DMC which stands for Digital Media Camera. After the DMC letters, there will be a "-" or dash, and then some more letters and numbers such as TZ, ZS, FS, etc.
Here is what they mean:
It does get somewhat confusing when you do are looking for information because North American camera models are named differently than those in the rest of the world even though they are exactly the same. Such is the difference between the DMC-TZ and DMC ZS models. They are exactly the same, except that Panasonic makes it even more difficult by changing the corresponding numbers as well so the DMC-ZS7 is equivalent to the DMC-TZ10.
However, when you look at Lumix cameras in Amazon for comparison shopping, Amazon knows what region you are in and will serve up the appropriate camera models.
As well, you will find out pretty quick what series is the best for you depending on your budget.
